Asset Management For IT

 Asset Management For IT

IT Asset Management, or ITAM, is a collection of business procedures and practises that supports asset tracking, asset life-cycle management and decision making for the IT sector. In the context of ITAM, the phrase ‘assets’ refer to any and all hardware (monitors, keyboards, etc) and software (programs, etc) owned by a company.

In the case of hardware, ITAM would encompass the procurement, maintenance and disposal, renewal or replacement of all fixed assets; so. physical computer components and networks. The main objectives of using ITAM is to increase the life-cycle of hardware, in order to diminish yearly costs. An ITAM company or asset management software should record any/all financial information related to the life-cycle of hardware; this would then allow a company to make more informed financial decisions.

Ideally ITAM software should be fully integrated into a company, making it easier for that company to develop protocols and process specifically designed to cut expenditure and general emissions.

The aim of ITAM is to minimise risk and expenditure, through hitting smaller, more specific targets. These goals would generally be to decrease expenditure, provide support, enhance life-cycle and perfomance of assets and to mimimise the companies’ carbon footprint. The ITAM software (or team) would generally also be responsible for the documenntation of all IT related assets in the company, making sure everything is accounted for an properly documented.

IT asset management is at its most effective when fully integrated into a company’s infastructure, allowing it to be accessed by every department. This kind of integration with other areas of the company, such as human resources, procurement, etc. allows for a more fluid use of the ITAM software, giving the company the best results for increasing asset life-cycle and lowering annual expenditure.
