Even if you are one of those people who can work fine in organised chaos, it might be better to tidy up as it only gives people a bad impression of you as a person. Having your desk or the floor beside you piled high with files, paper, and other items only makes people think you can’t cope. Whatever you say, you would not want your boss to have this impression of you.
Not to mention, that it is much easier to work when you are organised. You can ensure that everything is where you want it and easy to get to by tidying up your office space. Most bosses and clients do not have a lot of time to waste and will want you to provide them with information as and when they request it. By being organised, you can make sure that you know where everything is as and when it is needed. Plus it will be easier than you think to get your office space organised.
You should make sure that you order anything that will make organising your things easier. Filing cabinets are a great way to organise files so if you don’t have one it would be a good idea to look into getting one. ‘In’ and ‘out’ trays are another great way to organise paper on your desk. At the end of each day it is a good idea to tidy up your desk again. Getting yourself into the habit of keeping your office space tidy will mean that you don’t lapse back into having a cluttered desk and space again. Make sure that items that you often use are where you can get to them easily. Use your desk drawers for your spare pens, calculator, stapler etc and put them back when you are not using them. An organised office space makes it easier to get your work done and this can only create a good impression with your boss.
